FISHING TIPS

1The bait should be kept fresh by keeping it in a cooler on ice. Washed out bait
simply won’t catch as many fish so change your bait often.

2 Keep your hooks very sharp. Sharp hooks will catch you more channels as well as
flathead cats. Flathead will at times start out light biting the bait. They may have the live baitfish in their mouth but they haven't munched down on it completely and on occasions they will spit the bait out entirely. A fish will be more likely to hook himself it the point is super sharp even before you set the hook.

3Keep your line in good shape. Since the logs, rocks and big cats can really take a
toll on your line I recommend changing your line twice a season.

4Move often when fishing for channel cats during the day. If you don’t have a fish in
the boat within 15 minutes most likely it’s time to move to the next promising spot. By
fishing best areas for the most active cats you’ll wind up with more fish in your boat.

5Make sure that you have your hook always well exposed. Catfish don’t mind the
sharp  point of a hook but if the hook is buried in the bait you will miss the fish when
he hits.

6When fishing for flatheads wait until you get a good continuous run before you lock
up your reel and don’t set on him until you feel the weight of the fish pulls down on the
rod.

7Channel cats at times can be light biters. Don’t set on the fish until he gives you a
continuous pull on your rod.

8 Certain times of the year the river and lake can run high especially during the spring time. The rains can bring the the river or lake right out of it's banks. Very high water can be unsafe and these are times to keep your boat off the river period.
9 Practice catch and release. If you want some small fish to eat then keep the small ones and put the larger ones back. It can take many years for catfish to grow big in size and by releasing what you catch you'll insure that the area will continue to hold sizeable fish.
